last ball defeat!
Our second game of the season against Walthamstow Horizontals turned out to particularly eventful. Mirav , Nirav and Giles all made their debut for the club.
After winning the toss and choosing to bat 2 quick wickets were lost before Mendis and Mirav put together an 82 third wicket partnership. After struggling with his timing and being dropped twice Mirav put bat to ball with some firm shots before being bowled for 44.
Mendis was then supported by the middle order going on to an imperious 111 eventually holing out in the deep. He hit 2 big sixes into the adjoining tennis courts as well as a range of sumptuous drives and pulls. The tail then wagged with Neil 18 and Noddy 21 (welcomed back after a long absence)
The total of 248 looked competitive.
Hemang and Neil opened and bowled tightly , debutant Giles running out one of the openers with great reactions. Walthamstow then dug in – the bowlers were rotated but wickets were hard to come by. We followed the Walthamstow example spilling catching chances. The batsman took advantage of these missed chances and started to hit anything loose to the boundary with a 3rd wicket stand of 133.
Mendis came on and took 2 wickets and was on a hat-trick. The game looked like ours to take. Again Walthamstow then dug themselves out with some bit hits keeping up with the run rate.
A 6 in the penultimate over then saw 5 needed off the last over – Noddy bowled well and the scores were tied with one ball left. A leg bye was scrambled to give jubilant Walthamstow a victory by 5 wickets in the tightest of finishes.
A great game with almost 500 runs scored against great opposition.
